Your Library Card

Your library card is needed each time you borrow.  Membership to Wollondilly Library & Information Service is available to all members of the public.  Your Library card allows you to access online databases, books, magazines, DVDs, CDs and other items from Picton and the Mobile Library.

Please note All items borrowed on your card are your responsibility. You are responsible if any items borrowed on your card are subsequently lost or damaged, and for the payment of any associated costs. If you are signing as guarantor for a person under the age of 16, the responsibility for any items or fees on that card lies with you.  If you lose your library card the Library must be notified that the card has been lost so your card can be cancelled.

There is no charge for cancelling a lost library card. However, there is a $5.80 fee for the issuing of a replacement card. 


How do I Join the Library?

Library membership is free and open to everyone.  To apply in person ask for a membership form at Picton or the Mobile Library. You will need to show evidence of your current address and photo ID. You may also apply online - you will just need to come to the Library and show your photo ID to pick up your card. 

There are no age restrictions regarding Library membership - you can obtain a Library card at birth! People under the age of 16 must have a parent or guardian sign the membership form as guarantor, and the guarantor will require ID. People under the age of 18 who are living independently do not require a guarantor.


How many items can I borrow and for how long?

You may borrow a total of 20 items per library card, in any format. (There is a limit of 2 books per subject for non-fiction books used for school assignments). 

All items have a 3 week loan period, except for HSC items which may be borrowed for 1 week.

On occassion, newly-released items in particularly high demand may have a 2 week (14 day) loan period, in which case you will be notified of this at time of borrowing.


Where can I return items?

All items can be returned to either Picton Library or the Mobile Library regardless of where you borrowed them from. Picton Library has an after hours returns chute which enables you to return items when the library is closed.


What if I return something late?

It is your responsibility to return any items borrowed on your card to the library by the due date.  If you are unable to return any items on time please contact the Library to arrange a renewal

If a Library item becomes overdue, the Library will contact you to remind you to return it.  There are no fines for late returns.

However, if you do not reply to written requests to return overdue items the Council will charge you for the full replacement cost of the item including processing. Council may also undertake proceedings to recover this debt. Library items are publicly-funded items of community property. We always prefer to see items returned so that others may use them.


How do I renew items?

You can renew items in person at either the Picton or Mobile Library, by phone or online via the Library Catalogue. 

If you are renewing by phone or via the online have your library card barcode number handy. For the online catalogue you will also need your PIN. Items can be renewed up to a maximum of two (2) times for item borrowed from the Picton branch and the Mobile Library, unless a reservation has been placed on the item in which case we ask that you return the item by the due date.

You can renew your item(s) up to (and including) the due date. You will not be able to renew items online after the due date. Contact the Library if you have any problems. 


Why do I need a PIN for my library card?

A PIN is a combination of numbers and/or letters (of 4 to 10 characters) that provides an extra level of security when using your library card over the Internet.

A PIN enables you to access your borrower record on the Internet to renew items and make reservations. It also gives you free access to the Library's online databases, free use of our public computers at Picton Library, and access to photocopying and printing services at the Library. If you would like a PIN enabled on your library card, or if have forgotten your PIN, please contact Library staff.


How do I find a particular item?

You will find all our items by searching the catalogue. You can find out which branch holds the item, and whether it's available or not.  You can also use the catalogue to reserve items, review the status of items you have reserved, renew your books or see what items you have borrowed from the library and when they are due.

Ask the library staff if you need any assistance with using the catalogue.


How do I reserve library items?

You can reserve items in person at the Picton or the Mobile Library, by phone or online via the Library Catalogue. You will need your Library Card number and PIN to reserve items online.

We will contact you once your reservation is available for collection. You can nominate to be contacted by the Library via SMS text message, email or post. If you need any help, please contact your friendly Library staff.


What should I do if I change my address or contact details?

Let us know as soon as possible if any of your contact details change so we can update your library records. You can either do this in person at Picton Library, the Mobile Library  or by phone or email.

If you have changed address, you will need to show proof of your new address the next time you visit the library in person.


What should I do if I lose my card?

Report the loss of your library card at once by phone or in person. You are responsible for any items borrowed with your card until it is reported lost or stolen. Once reported, the library will place a block on the card so that it can no longer be used.  A replacement fee of $5.80 is charged for a new card.


Can I borrow items from other library services (Interlibrary Loans)?

If a book is not held by the library, it may be possible for us to borrow it for you from another library within Australia as an interlibrary loan. This usually takes between one to two weeks to organize, however some rare or specialized items can take longer.  A non-refundable fee of $2.80 per requested item is applicable. An additional charge of $16.50 per item is applicable if an item is only available from a University or Special Library.


Can I suggest items for the library to purchase?

We welcome suggestions for new additions to the collection. Decisions regarding the purchase of new material is at the discretion of the Collection Manager. Recommendations should be made to the Library in person, online, by phone or email.




The Picton Library has wheelchair access to the building and a wheelchair access toilet. The Mobile Library is fitted with a hydraulic lift  for anybody who has difficulty using the stairs.

The Home Library Service offers a free and  convenient way for housebound residents of Wollondilly Shire to borrow library books and other items. Library staff will bring a fresh supply of reading material to your door on a fortnightly basis. More Information can be found here.

The Library also has a collection of audio books and large print books, and patrons can also access free eBooks and eAudio books via Borrow Box, either here or by downloading the Borrow Box app.
